Floor heating systems for railway vehicles
Owing to the complex installation
processes in low-floor tramway vehicles the
application of conventional heating systems
is hardly feasible. The application of floor
heating or side panel elements respectively
adheres most closely to the guiding
principle of “warm feet – cool head”.
Furthermore this application offers the
possibility of enhancing thermal comfort by
avoiding the possible formation of thermal
bridges.
By increasing the surface temperature at the
at the passenger entrance/exit area these
can be prevented from icing over and
entrapped moisture can dissipate most
efficiently.
Plus, the energy source of said heating
systems can be directly connected to the
overhead wire voltage (700 VDC).
Advantages over conventional heating systems:• noiseless operation • maintenance-free • ice and snow introduced into the
entrance/exit area by the passengers can
be thawed off • improved atmospheric moisture readings
in comparison to under seat heating
systems and similar applications • extensive and uniform heat expansion,
excellent otward insulation →
“pleasantly warm side panels” • low energy consumption during non-stop
operation → cuts in energy costs • lightweight → straightforward
installation • excellent soundproofing properties • floor surfaces are easy to clean,
owing to the absence of bothersome
superstructural parts • watertight adaptor IP 68
The following floor covering solutions are
recommended:
Conventional PVC or PU floor covering
cemented with heat conducting, antistatic
adhesive materials.
Resin-based industrial floor covering cast
inside the train car. This particular floor
covering can be restored with relative ease.
Should repairs become necessary the floor
covering compound need only be poured on the
area that needs restoring.
The complete surface then only needs to be
sanded and polished so that no difference
between the "old" and the "new" floor
covering can be detected.
The diagram below illustrates the possible
application of elke TECHNIK floor heating
panels:

elke TECHNIK’s very specific technique of
applying heater wiring and the particular
placement of the heating circuits on the
entire surface of the heating panel,
virtually guarantees uniform heat expansion.
The infrared image below illustrates
sais uniform heat expansion.

According to customer
requirements, elke TECHNIK floor heating
systems can be fitted to a variety of
carrier plates.
Aluminium comb core panels and beech plywood
panels have proven to be especially
effective.
The aluminium comb core panel design stands
out due to the following advantages:
- Small installation height
- Extremely resilient construction with
an exceptional weight endurance of over
550 kg/m² at an installation height of
only 15 mm. Due to the rigidity of the
comb structure and the one-side
installation of the heating elements
with a gauge of 4 mm, twisting of the
panel is virtually impossible, even
during operation.
- No neteworthy shape distortion due to
thermal stress (< 0,05 mm per m²)
- Low dead load of the structure, thus
quick and straightforward installaion
- Excellent soundproofing properties
- Immense versatility

construction design heating panels can be
benefitted from in various forms of
application:
- Floor heating in driver's cabs of
railway vehicles
- Floor heating in passenger
compartments of railway vehicles
- Anti-freeze protection in passenger
entrance/exit areas of railway vehicles
